The Common Change Manchester Groups Tried Something New
At our recent meeting. Each member received an envelope containing two notes: one written and the other a gift to be shared. The note read:
“A Small Act of Generosity Inside this envelope is £20 with one request: find a way to share it. Whether it’s buying someone a coffee, baking treats for a neighbour, or passing it along to someone who needs it, your small act of kindness can make a big difference.”
Each week, we’ll share one member’s story to show how even the smallest gestures can remind us that people care.
#4 Rachel’s Story
Rachel works in a busy high school and sees firsthand the growing pressures on today’s teenagers. With reduced school funding and rising demands, the challenges feel endless.
To show her students just how valued they are, Rachel donated her £20 to the school’s Student Fund, asking for it to be used toward the end-of-year treat or essential student support programs. Her act of generosity reminds us that sometimes the most powerful ways to help are right in front of us. What would you do with £20 to share?
#3 Paul & Jane’s Story
Having the responsibility of a large gift to give can be a little overwhelming and so the small gift of £2o was burning a hole in the pockets of Paul and Jane. They chose to make three separate small gifts of support to show people in their community that they care!
- The first was some flowers delivered together with a card and handwritten card from friends in the group. A gesture of care and support after the loss of a spouse.
- The second was to help pay for the replacement of a volunteer’s burst bicycle tire; “This gift did exhaust the funds, but by this point, we were on a roll and just paid the difference ourselves”
- The third was a couple of boxes of quality street chocolates, delivered to the teachers of their local high school on the eve of their OFSTED inspection. “We wanted to show them that we appreciate all their hard work and that no matter the outcome, we are grateful for their contribution to our children’s education and the value and guidance they contribute to their lives”.
What would you gift if you had £20 to gift in your pocket?
#2 Jem’s Story
After learning that a dear friend was recovering from medical treatment, this Small Act of Generosity was doubled by Jem!
“I’d heard about a collection going around to help them enjoy a bit of a well-deserved break. I contributed £20 and matched the amount with funds of my own. I’m hoping it helps give them some peace and space to recharge”.
What small act of generosity would love “to have in your pocket” ready to give at a moment’s notice?
#1 Sam’s Story
After a mother suddenly lost her son, she had little in ways of funeral costs. For Sam, the small act of kindness was just waiting to be given.
“It was only £20 but it was there and I gave it without hesitation, only wishing it could have been more”.
We would love to hear your story! Let’s see how far our small acts can go to spread kindness.
