Living More Lightly
In the canteen with Dr Ruth Valerio
About this month’s event
Join our hosts Laura Gilchrist and Matt Wilson, for this month’s Common Good Canteen, with special guest Ruth Valerio.
Dr Ruth Valerio is an environmentalist, theologian, social activist and Global Advocacy and Influencing Director at Tearfund. She is also Canon Theologian at Rochester Cathedral. She enjoys living sustainably – practising what she preaches and inspiring others as she does so – in the South of England with her family. She is the author of L is for Lifestyle:Christian Living that doesn’t cost the earth and Just Living:Faith and Community in an age of Consumerism, and has written the Archbishop of Canterbury’s 2020 Lent book, entitled Saying Yes to Life. Ruth is a regular contributor on Radio 4 and the BBC World Service.
In this month’s lunchtime conversation Ruth will help us to explore the issues around living in a ‘consumer’ society. What are the direct and indirect effects of our spending decisions, on ourselves and on others? Do we own our possessions or do they own us? And after all, what good are our acts of charity if they are outweighed by the harms that our over-consumptive lives create? For people seeking to build and belong to communities centred around a vision of justice these are essential issues to be getting to grips with.
